Vaccine and Travel Medication List
M.S. Shook Student Health Service offers the vaccines listed below. Students will be informed beforehand of charges for vaccinations and medications that are recommended.
- Hepatitis A (Havrix): 2 shot series; Takes a minimum of 6-months to complete
- Hepatitis B (Engerix B): 3 shot series; Takes a minimum of 6-months to complete.
- Varivax (Chickenpox): 2 shot series; 1 now & 1 in 4-6 weeks
- Typhoid Injectable (Typhoid Vi)
- Typhoid Oral (Vivotif)
- Meningococcal Vaccine (Menactra)
- MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella)
- Tetanus Diphtheria (Td)
- Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussin (Tdap)
- TB Skin Test (TST): (tests given Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays)
- HPV (Gardasil): 3 shot series
Anti-malarials (oral)
- Aralen 500 mgm (Chloroquine): A minimum of 6 tablets
- (1 tab 7 days before arrival in country, 1 tab weekly during travel, and 1 tab weekly for 4 weeks after returning home)
- Malarone
- (1 tab daily 2 days before arrival in country, continue taking 1 tab daily during travel, and 1 tab daily for 7 days after returning home)
- Doxycycline
- (1 tab daily 2 days before arrival in country, continue taking 1 tab daily during travel, and 1 tab daily for 28 days after returning home)
- Lariam (Mefloquine)
- (No longer offered at Student Health Pharmacy due to the potential for severe side effects)
Altitude Sickness Medication
- Diamox (Acetazolamide): Twice daily; quantity varies by need.
- Traveler’s Diarrhea Medication:
- Imodium: Quantity varies.
- Azithromycin 250mg: Prescription only.
- Cipro 500mg: Prescription only.
- Pepto-Bismol Tabs: As a preventative.
TB Skin Tests (TST)
TB Skin Tests (TST) are administered at Student Health Service as follows:
- Mondays (results read on Thursday)
- Tuesdays (results read on Friday)
- Fridays (results read on Monday)
The TB Skin Test (TST) is free if you bring the Travel Nurse a postcard from your travels.
