ADHD Care at Student Health Service

Overview

Student Health Service does not perform ADHD testing but may prescribe medication after reviewing a formal diagnosis and full records. A clinician determines if treatment is safe and appropriate for you. Getting Started: Choose Your Path.

  • Suspect ADHD: We do not provide testing. Please refer to our list of local psychologists for a professional evaluation.

  • Existing Diagnosis: Submit your diagnosis and treatment records for review before scheduling an appointment.

  • Childhood Diagnosis: We will review records from your previous specialists. You must sign a Release of Medical Information form for us to request these.

  • Medicine Trial: A trial alone does not confirm a diagnosis. A full ADHD evaluation is required to consider stimulant medication.

Required Records for Review

Submit a full report from your psychologist or neuropsychologist before your visit.

  • Where to send: Fax to 828-262-6958 or email to [email protected].

  • What to include:

    • Patient information (name, DOB, test date).

    • Evaluator details (name, credentials, office address, phone number, and signature).

    • Comprehensive clinical interview covering school, health, mental health, current medications, and symptoms.

    • Test results, including names and scores of attention tests and other assessments used for diagnosis.

    • Clear diagnosis and recommended next steps.

  • Important notes: Online symptom checklists, IEPs, or 504 Plans are not sufficient on their own. Generally, testing must have been conducted within the last five years.

Visits and Prescriptions

  • First Visit: We review your records, blood pressure, weight, and medication history to determine if a prescription is safe.

  • Refills: Call 828-262-3100 at least one week in advance. Refills are not available on weekends or during university breaks, and same-day refills are typically not available.

  • Adjustments: Schedule an appointment if you need dosage changes, feel the medication is not working, or experience side effects.

  • Pharmacy Notice: The App State Pharmacy does not carry ADHD medication; you must fill prescriptions at an outside pharmacy.

Safety Reminders

  • Sending records does not guarantee a prescription; a clinician may decide stimulant medication is not safe for you.

  • Keep medication secured.

  • Do not share or alter prescriptions; these actions are illegal and may lead to termination of care.

  • If your medication is lost or stolen, contact your clinician immediately.

I think I may have ADHD

We do not provide psychological testing for ADHD. Please reference our list of local psychologist that can complete testing.
 

 

I already have an ADHD diagnosis

Send your diagnosis and treatment records to Student Health before you make an ADHD medicine visit. We will review the records to see if they meet our rules.

 

I was diagnosed as a child

Student Health will review records from the specialist who diagnosed you and your home medical provider. You must sign a Release of Medical Information form so we can ask for the records.
 

 

An outside provider gave me medicine as a trial

A medicine trial by itself does not prove an ADHD diagnosis. Student Health needs records from a full ADHD evaluation before we can consider stimulant medicine.
 

What Records Do I Need?

Before your visit, send us a copy of the full report from the psychologist or neuropsychologist who diagnosed you. Send it early so our team has time to review it before your visit.

The report should include:

  • Your name, birth date, and the date of the test.

  • The evaluator's name, training, office address, phone number, signature, and report date.

  • An interview about your school, health, mental health, medicines, and current symptoms.

  • Tests that measure attention. The report should also include other tests used to make the diagnosis.

  • The names and scores of all tests, what the results mean, the diagnosis, and next steps.

Important notes about your records

  • Online checklists or symptom forms by themselves are not enough for a diagnosis.

  • You may send an IEP or 504 Plan, but it is not enough by itself.

  • In most cases, the testing must be from the last five years.

  • A family member or close friend cannot do the testing.

  • We may review older childhood records and your treatment history. You may still need new testing.

Visits and Prescriptions

First visit

After we get your records, make a visit with a Student Health clinician. We will review your records, blood pressure, weight, medicines, and possible side effects. A prescription may be given if your records meet the rules and the medicine is safe for you.

Follow-up and refill visits

  • Call 828-262-3100 at least one week before you need a refill visit.

  • Same-day refill visits are usually not available.

  • Refill visits are offered from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

  • Refills are not given during weekend clinic or University breaks.

  • Make your refill visit before your medicine runs out.

Medicine changes or side effects

Make a visit if your medicine is not working, you think the dose should change, or you have side effects. Try to see the same Student Health clinician for your ADHD care.

Pharmacy reminder: The App State Pharmacy does not carry ADHD medicine. You must fill the prescription at another pharmacy and pay any cost.
 

Safety and Clinical Review

Sending records does not mean you will get an ADHD prescription. A clinician may decide that stimulant medicine is not safe for you. Reasons may include substance use, anxiety, mood symptoms, other health problems, or problems with other medicines.

Keep your medicine safe

  • Keep ADHD medicine locked in a safe place.

  • If your medicine or prescription is lost or stolen, make a visit with your clinician. A replacement may not be given.

  • Do not share your medicine. Sharing prescription medicine is illegal. Student Health may stop prescribing it to you.

  • Do not change a written prescription. This is illegal. Student Health will not give you more ADHD prescriptions if you change one.
