What is the difference between an SA and an ESA? |
Service Animals (SA) are specifically trained to perform tasks for individuals with disabilities. Emotional Support Animals (ESA) provide therapeutic comfort but are not task-trained. |

Where can I bring my animal on campus? |
Service Animals have access to all public areas, including classrooms and dining facilities. ESAs are strictly limited to your assigned University Housing unit and are not permitted in academic or dining buildings. Please review the Planning for an ESA guidance. is found here. |

What steps do I need to take before bringing my animal to App State? |
For Service Animals, you should contact the Office of Access & Opportunity: Disability Resources (ODR) before you arrive. For ESAs, you must receive formal pre-approval from both ODR and University Housing before the animal is brought to campus. |

Can I get an ESA letter from Student Health Services? |
No. Student Health Service medical staff do not issue ESA letters of support. You will need to provide documentation from your own external healthcare provider to ODR. |

What about Service Animals in Training? |
Dogs in training are allowed in public areas only when accompanied by their trainer and wearing visible identification, such as a harness, cape, or specific collar. |

What if I do not have a therapist? |
Our counseling center has a listing of local therapists you can connect with to establish care and request a letter. There is also a referral coordinator with counseling who may be able to support you as you seek out care in the Boone area. |
