Student Insurance Information

Current waiver period for spring and summer 2025 has closed. The fall 2025 waiver period has not opened. Once the fall waiver period opens, this website will be updated.

Health Insurance Requirement 

All students are required to have health insurance. You can stay on your parent’s plan, purchase your own, or buy Student BlueSM. Proof of insurance must be provided online. If you do not have insurance, you will need to enroll in Student BlueSM. Important updates and your waiver status will be communicated via your AppState email address, though you can also add a secondary email if needed.

Cost and Coverage Dates

Student BlueSM, underwritten by Blue Cross Blue Shield® of North Carolina, will be the insurance carrier for the 2024-2025 academic year. Charges for the Student BlueSM premium will appear on your AppState student account, and approved waivers will be credited.

Important Additional Information

  • Distance Education Students: Not required to have insurance but can purchase it if desired.
  • Medicaid Family Planning: Not acceptable for waivers.
  • Student Blue Charges: If you’re billed for Student Blue on your AppState account, you are required to have insurance. Approved waivers will appear as credits.
  • Dependents: Student BlueSM does not cover spouses, domestic partners, or children.
  • Tricare Waiver: Use the sponsor’s SSN to waive.
  • Student BlueSM Enrollment: Choose between premium or value plans online. Premiums are not prorated.
