D. Taylor Rushing, MD
Dr. Rushing grew up in Alabama. He did his undergraduate studies at Troy State University and he attended medical school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He completed a pediatrics residency at the Medical University of South Carolina. He was in a private pediatrics practice in Boone for seven years. He then transitioned into Student Health, working at the Student Health Service at NCSU for 15 months before returning to Boone and Appalachian State's M.S. Shook Student Health Service. He has been with the M.S. Shook Student Health Service since 2005 and has served as the Medical Director since 2018. He has special interests in infectious diseases, public health responses to communicable diseases, and travel medicine. Dr. Rushing is married and has two daughters. His wife, Kim, is a staff nurse at M.S. Shook Student Health Service. He enjoys gardening, hiking, baking, traveling, and spending time with his family, dog, and two cats.

V. Leigh Beasley, MD

E. Torre Hinnant, MD
Torre Hinnant was born in Richmond, Virginia where she completed her B.F.A. in Dance and Choreography at Virginia Commonwealth University. After a successful career in contemporary dance, she attended Eastern Virginia Medical School and obtained her medical doctorate. She then completed her residency training in family medicine at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. She is Board Certified in Family Medicine and is Board Certified by the American Board of Holistic and Integrative Medicine. She is a member of our Eating Concerns Treatment Team at App State and has special interests in preventative medicine, exercise, and nutrition. In her spare time, she enjoys teaching yoga and enjoys hiking with her husband and two dogs.


Laura Den Ouden, MD
Dr. Laura Den Ouden went to medical school at the University of Missouri - Columbia. Her intern year was at the Medical College of Milwaukee and residency at Good Samaritan in Phoenix, Arizona. She practiced Internal Medicine in Missouri for 25 years before joining M.S. Shook Student Health Service in 2022.
One area of interest for her is Diabetes. She has had Type 1 Diabetes since age 15, wears an insulin pump and dexcom, and is always available to discuss and educate on topics related to this disease.


Jeremy Sexton, MD
Dr. Jeremy Sexton was born and raised in Asheville, NC. He has a bachelor's degree from UNC Asheville in Theater. He attended East Carolina University for medical school, then residency in Idaho specializing in rural family medicine. After spending 7 years as a rural primary care doctor in eastern North Carolina, he returned to the mountains with his family to work at AppState Student Health Clinic. Dr. Sexton is married with 2 young boys.


Rebecca Moretz, MD
Dr. Moretz attended undergraduate and medical school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She also completed her psychiatry residency and child & adolescent psychiatry felloship at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. Dr. Moretz is originally from Boone, NC, and loves living in the Appalachian Mountains. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family and three dogs, running half marathons, and clogging with her dance team.
